I Was Once A Little Girl
Please remember I was once a little girl
who laughed and cooed
when my mother sat me in a chair to feed
me food.
Please remember I was once a little girl
who took my first steps
and not the woman now who repeats herself
and makes you upset.
Please remember I was once the little
girl who rode the bus to school
and not the woman now who you think is
a fool.
Please remember I was once a little girl
who played all day long, no tired feet and not the woman now who at three
o’clock is beat.
Please remember I was once a little girl
who took to studying
and not the woman now who is upset and
crying.
Please remember I was once a little girl
who grew up and married
had children, kept a home, and my husband
is now buried.
Please remember I was once a little girl
who took pity on old people
like me and not the woman now who shouts
to God, “Take me!”
Please remember I was once a little girl
and so were you,
please say a kind word or two because
years from now,
you may say these words too.
